The belly of the whale is a magical threshold of transit into the sphere of rebirth. This segment of the journey is represented by the image of the whale’s belly. This threshold passage is a form of self-annihilation into rebirth. You are overwhelmed by it, with no escape or relief in sight. Water is the unconscious- the unknown. My story will have some belly-of-the-whale moments. There are examples of the belly of the whale: the trash compactor in Star Wars, the lake in Beowulf, the storm/ the ocean in Kingdom of Heaven, the elephant graveyard in The Lion King, and the well of souls in Raiders of the Lost Ark.
